January 17-21

This week we did some research about Saskatoon in Social Studies. Students were able to use several different resources to find out important facts about this city.

In Math we played a game called guess my number.  This game helps students with their mathematical reasoning skills.  Ask your child how to play.

We have also been working on two digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.

In writing, Students were learning the structure of instructional writing and how to use transitional words between ideas. This week we wrote a story about a haircut.

Willy Wonka

If your child expressed an interest in auditioning for the Willy Wonka production, they were sent home with a sheet with audition lines.  If you are unable to find the sheet I have linked it here.

1 Week until Winter Break

This may be the last post before the break, but it is still full of lots of important information so be sure to read to the end.

Homework- Homework for this week/the first week back has been posted. I would like to emphasize that this is NOT homework for the break. It is intended to be for this week and/or the first week back at school (no homework will be posted on January 2nd), depending on how you can best fit it into your schedule. The break should be spent having fun with family, making memories, and not stressing about schoolwork. Read with your children, make it a family bonding time, to maintain reading throughout the year.

If you child did not bring their magnet project on Friday, please have them bring it tomorrow as we will be sharing them in class.

Over the past few weeks we have been working on descriptive sentences.  After reading the book "How do bears sleep?"  the students were given the basic sentence "The bear is sleeping" and they had to add descriptive words to embellish it.  Students also created an art piece using oil pastel and watercolour paint.  They used their knowledge of patterning to create their own pattern on the bears quilt.

We have also had the pleasure of having a student teacher (Ms. Fatica) join our classroom for the last few weeks.  We are fortunate that she has a background in yoga and she created a yoga routine for our class to help keep us calm and centred.

Important Dates this week:

Dec 13 - FANCY/FORMAL Christmas attire or formal uniform

Dec 14 Casual - Wear colours found in Christmas lights

Dec 15 Casual - Wear a Santa hat, antlers, or an elf hat, carolling during our gym block

Dec 16 Casual - Christmas sweater, carolling during our gym block

Dec 17 - last day of classes for 2021 - PJ day

November 21, 2021

This week we have been working on odd and even numbers in Math.  We learned a new game called "Slap It".  Ask your child how to play!

In Writing, we worked on making a story plan before beginning our writing.  We discussed how it is a great tool to figure out the points we want to write about before starting.

In Science, we finished our unit on Small, crawling and flying animals.  We will begin our next unit on Magnetism next week.

We were fortunate to have a hip hop instructor during Phys.Ed this week.  The students worked hard on creating their own original dance.  You will be receiving the link for our class next week so you can watch their amazing moves!

Thursday evening and Friday are parent/teacher conferences.  If you haven't had a chance to book a conference with me please do so.  I am looking forward to chatting with you all about your child's progress.

November News

Time has been flying by and we are now in November!  We have been having a lot of fun the past few weeks. We celebrated Halloween in our class and participated in some Halloween centres such as writing stories using a picture prompt, making a monster with play dough and describing it, and creating a magnetic haunted house.

In literacy we have been working on learning parts of a sentence and how to include triple scoop words in our writing to make it more interesting.

In math, we have been studying increasing patterns and being able to describe the pattern rule.  We have also been doing some word problems with both addition and subtraction.

As many of you are aware, we have some construction going on in our school.  Because we have a large construction wall we thought we would make it look nicer by decorating it with drawings and have Le Roi students colour it.  This week our class had a chance to colour some of the pictures.

On Friday your child brought home a beautiful piece of art that we have been working on, using a variety of different mediums.  If you wish to support our school Acorn Art fundraiser please check the order form for instructions on how to order.  In the past I have had many families use this as a way to produce holiday cards and they turn out beautifully!

The Grade 2 students have been practicing and filming our upcoming Remembrance Day assembly.  The link will be shared with parents this week.  The students did an amazing job!
